Understand your default style and when it stops working.
Define what good looks like, in writing.
Tackle underperformance early, calmly, without losing good people.
Build standards that hold when you are not watching.
What customers judge in the first thirty seconds.
Justify the job without sounding like a salesperson.
Turn an unhappy customer into a loyal one.
Systematically earn feedback, referrals and return visits.
Day one is about what happens behind the counter: how you lead, what standards you have set, and whether the work leaves your workshop to the same quality every time regardless of who did it. Day two is about what the customer sees, which is the only part of your business they can actually judge. Customers cannot assess a diagnosis or a repair. They assess how the phone was answered, how the work was explained, what the bill looked like against what they were told, and how the car came back. Fix one without the other and you get a garage that either does excellent work nobody appreciates, or promises an experience it cannot consistently deliver.
Day one covers your leadership style and where it is costing you, setting expectations people can genuinely meet, having the conversations you have been avoiding, and building quality standards and checks that do not depend on you walking the workshop. Day two takes the customer journey end to end: first impressions and phone handling, uncovering what the customer actually needs, explaining and justifying work without discounting your way out of it, handling complaints so they strengthen the relationship, and generating reviews and repeat work as a habit rather than by luck.
Andy Savva has run independent garages for over thirty years and is clear that customer service, not technical ability, was what made his own business succeed — and that it was only possible because the team behind it knew exactly what good looked like. Both days are built entirely around the independent garage, with things you can put in place the week you get back. Done together, the result is a business that runs to a standard when you are not there, and customers who stop comparing you to the garage down the road.
“Completely changing my mind set of how we are perceived to customers and how we can change to improve.”
