Not advertising. The whole way you win work.
Decide who you want, and who you don't.
Be different on purpose, not cheaper by default.
Signage, uniform, premises and everything customers judge silently.
Own your town before you worry about anything else.
Website, Google listing and reviews, done properly.
The cheapest growth is already on your database.
One page you can actually follow each month.
The work comes in, so nobody thinks about where from. Then a quiet month arrives, a rep sells you a leaflet drop or a boosted post, nothing obvious happens, and the conclusion is that marketing does not work for garages. It does. What does not work is doing bits of it, occasionally, with no idea who you are trying to reach or what makes you worth choosing.
This one-day course starts before the tactics. You will work out who your ideal customer actually is and which customers you would be better off without, then decide how your garage is positioned against everyone else locally, because if a customer cannot tell the difference between you and the garage down the road they will default to price every time. From there it gets practical: your premises and your brand, your Google listing and reviews, your website, your local presence, and the customer database you already own and almost certainly under-use. You will leave with a marketing plan on one page that fits around running a workshop rather than assuming you have a marketing department.
Andy Savva built and sold garage businesses on exactly this, by being deliberately niche and deliberately different rather than by outspending anyone. Our recent research into the sector also tells you where to spend your effort: garage customers and owners are on Facebook, not LinkedIn, and most owners have never asked a single customer how they found them. The day is designed entirely around the independent garage, and everything in it can be put in place the week you get back.
“Andy’s approach to the marketing of his own workshop by being both niche and different is particularly brilliant”
